The Old Hut

‘The Old Hut’ is an intriguing narrative writing prompt that will generate some interesting discussion in your classroom. Is the old hut magical? Who lives in the magical hut? Where is it and how long has it been there? What is it made of and what are the markings on the outside? Use these questions to develop a story line that your students can use in their writing. Encourage them to create a simple plan that they can share with the class. This way, students who struggle to plan, can borrow ideas from other students. Story Starter

My grandfather had moved here when he wanted to start a new life. He had taken nothing but a duffel bag with his essentials. He did not want to end up like the other men before him, who had a minimal view of what the outside world would hold. He wanted to be the one to tell his children adventure stories and teach them to spread their wings.

He resolved it would be hypocritical to encourage adventure and not be an explorer, so he left home, much to his parents’ disapproval.

Narrative Writing Example

This narrative writing example is unique and doesn’t take on the conventional adventure short story theme. The main character discusses their grandfather’s attachment to an old hut that has been around for generations. The simple story has some great descriptions, vocabulary and punctuation that students can ‘magpie’ for their own stories.
